On the internet? I've always found it weird how the minute a site goes up that's positive towards a product it's accused of astroturfing, yet any so called 'personal' blog with about as much credibility gets seen as if it's 100% fact in the gaming community.

On that note, wouldn't it be a good marketing trick (albeit likely illegal according to those advertising regulation agencies) to set up a fake 'insider' blog run by a so called disgruntled employee that subtly promotes your own (rival) corporation and hints that the other place is run in a horrifically unfair manner? Heck, why do I have this feeling such a cheap site would be seen as truth by certain forums which put way too much stock in rumours and rants?

Because deep inside people like to believe it's true.

It's because many people want to believe it is true; the wish is father of the thought.
It may also have something to do with many people wanting to see the little guy sock it to big business.
