I'm not sure why there are still gay or bi people who don't publicly admit they are gay or bisexual in public since it is not like being gay or bi is shameful or immoral since everyone should have a right to love who they want no matter what gender they like.

I think if you're gay or bi, and admit you are gay or bi it could make life a lot easier then pretanding to be straight, or having no interest in either genders since you get to meet more friends and people who are into the same gender, and have more support from the gay and bi community.

Plus, fewer friends will hook you up with members of the opposite sex if they know you are gay, and might recommend other gay friends for you to date or hang out with.

For the fear of being "less of a human" by some people. I would say society, but I feel like the newer generations are being more open-minded (unless you are surrounded by ignorant people).

Are you seriously asking that question? You think this world is all fluffy bunnies?

I won't sound like i know why people that are gay or bi still keep it secret, but there's losers everywhere waiting to make someone's life hell and usually it's because of something they don't have any control of.

I would have asked what planet you are from, but I'll take a shot in the dark and guess that you're from Canada right? They've had equal rights for awhile now.

They don't admit it for the same reasons that the Mathew Shepard, Tyler Clementi, and other people who were either killed or bullied to the point of commiting suicide are no longer with us.

It is because people, have a strong hatred of gays to the point where they lose their humanity.

They stay in the closet for the same reason fair skinned Blacks relaxed their hair to pass the "Pencil Test" (where a pencil was placed in their hair an if it fell out then they would be considered White) and lightened their skin so that they could pass for White in the 50's, and that is because if discovered, they'd be treated like shit, or worse, killed.

It has gotten better, for at least the Gays though. I have never heard of a Gay person being tied to a tree and set on fire by homophobes, like Blacks have been by Whites, and I have never heard of a Gay person being tied to the back of a truck and then dragged for miles to his death, like there has been with Black man and 3 racist White men. That actually happened a few years ago.

I think when you have heard the stories about the Gays being bullied, beaten, and killed for no other reason than the fact that they are Gay, that is STILL going on especially, in this country, then you'll come to understand exactly why they either stay in the closet or pretend to be straight.

Unlike with Gays, a person's family won't turn on a Black person simply because they are Black, but if they are gay, then they risk being tormented by their own family, as well as the homophobic assholes in today's society.

And the Gay Community having support is only recent as they've decided to band together in solidarity because they have not only been abused and abandoned by their friends and families, but they have been treated this way by society as well. It is kind of like being apart of a group of people who weren't chosen to be on a team for dodgeball or soccer, at first you feel bad because you weren't chosen, but when you see that there is a team of others like you, who accept you for who you are, and know how you feel, because they've been there, then you feel better because you know that you have a support system.

If the support system didn't have as strong a voice as it did because of celebrities, gay or not, and other people who had the courage to come out and be proud of who they are, then rest assured there'd be a lot more closeted people. Just because there seems to be a strong support of the Gay community, doesn't mean that a Gay person is completely safe to be who they are.

As fucked up as Americans can be on this subject, it could be a lot worse. In the Caribbean, in countries like Jamaica, they are very hateful of Gays to the point that some men have been killed and some women have been raped by men who feel that they can cure them of their "sickness" and don't even get me started on the Middle East.

As the others have said, society has not evolved enough to accept them. It will take the death of the previous, current and next generation for the hate of gays to be thinned or stopped so long as people support it during those times.

though they may be welcomed already if it were not for religion and the idiots who claim god hates what god makes.

Your generation? I think we are going to have to wait a few more generations to see anything positive. Sorry but your generation is pretty bad right now.

Younger generations have gotten to be more complacent than previous ones. Previous generations criticize the younger generation's complacency, despite the fact that they were more complacent than the previous generation in their youth.

Just look at the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's compared to today.

The 50's saw the Civil Rights movement.

The 60's saw the Korean War protests.

The 70's saw the Vietnam War protests.

The 80's saw the Cold War protests.

The 90's and 00's were quiet until Desert Storm and then 9/11 Parts 1 & 2.

The 10's saw the SOPA, PIPA and ACTA protests by a few, but the majority still only sees Social Networking, Duck faces, Bathroom pics and Reality TV. Usually too wrapped up in their own world to look at what is going on in the world around them, won't care about anything unless it affects them directly and will go on to bitch about how fucked up things are and how someone should have done something about it.

I could not agree more!

Also, I love that quote - never heard it before.

Back on topic: I have a few gay friends (female and male) both don't openly admit it because of losing friends, criticisms, and the majority was what the family would think. My friend told her family after a year of being with her partner and she's never been happier but not all famillies are as understanding, I'm sure. They're are several reasons they are reluctant to or just don't come out completely and only to the ones closest to them.

No one should have to reveal any information about themselves that they don't want to.

I'm sure you can research oppresion of sexualities to find some general good reasons why someone might not want to come out, but every person is different and will of course have their own personal reasons.

I've been following this artist on DA who is a gay female and she has recently posted a journal about being disowned by her family because she is being true to herself and marrying her love.

Truly a sad thing.
