Why do they have to change them?

Ok, why is it that the creators of great video games have to change the looks of the characters? Take the RE series. Now I realize that as technology gets better and games are designed, recreating a good game, like the RE genre, sometimes whoever is designing the characters change them. They don't quite look like they did in prior games. I wonder why? Its not like the game designers can't draw the characters the same way. Afterall they are artists. So what is it? Take a look at Leon S. Kennedy in RE4 (loved it!) I fell in love with Leon in RE4. Then RE5 came out, and he looked alittle different. Then RE6 came out and he again looks different. Although he still has some of the funny sacasm expected of Leon, like RE4, they went and made him look different. :yuck: And there in lies my frustration. Come to think of it .... they seem to change all of the characters looks when they make sequels, don't they?
 
Sometimes they change them to stay hip and a lot of times hip is just fail.

Your 100% right, they change them to appeal to the younger generation. Today's developers can give two cents about making their fans happy. The only thing they care about is how many units are sold. And a lot of times it blows up in their face.

I'll give the designers the benefit of the doubt and say that it's to keep it fresh, and that maybe in the wave of feedback that each game gets on storyline, gameplay, the graphics in general...perhaps the look of a single character doesn't make it through unless, say, the change in the look is extreme like with Dante from DmC.
 
Most of the times they get changed because the creator thinks they look better. Even though most of the players that play the game dislike it, it's to late to change it because the game is already within the market.
 
Characters get changed because they believe that their fans want to see change even though sometimes their fans are not too fussed about what their characters look like as long as the game runs smoothly and things are working well. Resident Evil was one of the bigger culprits for doing this and I never really saw a reason behind it to be honest.
 
It makes the game seem fresh and more realistic as the characters look would change over the year. Just as a for your information, I don't think Leon S. Kennedy was in RE5? 

He appeared first in  RE2 and then 4 and 6 and a few of the non-number titles but I do not believe he was in 5.
 
It makes the game more fun when the character isn't always wearing the same cloths all of the time. It gives them a more realistic personality and gives them a more complex state of individuality in the game. Devil May Cry's Dante is a great example. His style has changed multiple timse in every game.
