Why is everyone so obsessed with the idea of a futuristic Zelda game anyway?

Seriously, you've all seen that recent fan art of what someone visualises a 'modern' looking Zelda game to be:

And recalled memories of the old 'Valley of the Flood' or 'future Zelda' or whatever rumour from back in the olden days, right?

But what's with the obsession with the idea of a 'modern' set Zelda game anyway?

And it's almost always talked about as a 'futuristic, somewhat dark' game. Despite having god knows how many possible influences to go off of and about a thousand years of history between the medieval era and now.

So why is that? You hardly ever hear about the idea of an old fashioned style Metroid game or a futuristic Mario game or a Pokemon game set anywhere but the modern day, so why always Zelda and futuristic themes in fan ideas/art/whatever?

The one who made this is not a true Zelda fan.

Pokemon is currently playing with this idea I think. Black is set in the future and White is the present/past (the time difference is exactly one generation, as illustrated in an optional event that takes place in the game). BW2 might go even further since they have an ice age covering the old areas.

Back to Zelda though, I think that the developers have been playing with the idea of time ever since OoT. It only makes sense that it goes further in both directions the longer the series goes. Personally, I love darker Zelda games. Also, given the events of SS, perhaps this "futuristic" world is actually even further in the past! The timeshift zones obviously were far advanced, though the idea of a standardized Link-esque costume for guardsmen would not be introduced until Spirit Tracks. Yes, it would be a radical shift, but not an unprecedented shift given the foundation already built into the series.

I think that a futuristic Zelda game would be really neat. A big city with lots of things to do... Maybe a steampunk theme? That always looks cool.

I'd say it's a need for adventure. I haven't played any of the newer zelda games, but the old ones all revolved around the same idea and took place in generally the same area.

I wouldn't like that at all. I still hate that ST had trains. Zelda is meant to be set in an older time period. That's why he uses swords. If it it's too modern, he'd have guns and that would suck.

Not necessarily. Maybe enemies would have guns (the drone things in SS had rocket launchers and the Beamos have always had lasers), but Link could have tonfa/baton to start and then maybe a stun rod later on, finishing up with a lightsaber-esque blade.

If I want to go play a futuristic game I'd go play a game like Fallout, not theLegend of Zelda. Face it, putting Link in the future is nearly as bad as how Sega mae Sonic a swordfighting werewolf asshole.

A futuristic Zelda game just wouldn't have the same older-time charm as the other games. I think the most modern Zelda game was Spirit Tracks, but it was still set most likely a hundred years ago or so.
