Wii is struggling. As Nintendo fans across the globe wonder what they're supposed to be playing, Nintendo is watching its sales for the former console giant dip. In a recent interview with the Mercury News, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was asked if he was worried about the sales of the system, and whether the announcement of Wii U would impact them.

"Well, of course, no single entertainment device can enjoy eternal popularity," Iwata told the paper. "And when it comes to Wii, we have to understand that any potential sales are going to be affected by the seasonalities much more than before.

"If we cannot sell as well as we expect to during the holiday sales season, it's going to be a grave concern for us. But right now, I think it's premature to say, in terms of the current sales, what the one-year sales (result) will be like.

"It's nothing new. Last year and two years before, many people were very much concerned about the future of the Wii around this time of the year. However, the fact of the matter is that it ended up being the top-selling home console hardware of the year two years in a row, each year exceeding the previous record. That's simply because the Wii was able to enjoy great sales during the holiday season."

This isn't the first time Nintendo has pointed to the coming holiday season as Wii's key sales period. Will the system enjoy a resurgence with the arrival of a new Kirby game and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword?

I think it's because of the VC that Wii isn't dead in the water right now.

Last Christmas Nintendo Wii was the hottest selling gift. Everyone wanted it. It was cheap and loads of fun. It was everyone naturally choice when it came to gifting a gaming console. Sadly, things have changed a LOT.Nintendo Wii was the No.1 gaming console in U.S in sales now it has fallen to No.3. But the company’s U.S. chief insists there’s still a significant market.Nintendo Wii, the console that became a sensation for letting players swing a virtual tennis racket or steer a virtual car with a flick of the wrist.

DS, the VC isn't the only reason... Little kids, people who want to exercise, people who like Nintendo, the good games on the Wii, Homebrew, etc.

I think that the reason the Wii was so popular a few years ago was because it was a cheap console with a solid variety of games. People would look at the three consoles and choose the Wii due to its cheap price and ability to entertain a family audience. Now that Sony have lowered the price of the PS3, new buyers may be more easily persuaded by the PS3, or perhaps Microsoft's Kinect, which provides the same quality (if not, better) family appeal to Nintendo.

The only things keeping the Wii afloat in my opinion at what everyone's said thus far, the VC.
