Car ownership including electric car ownership may become less popular in the future because of the high cost of owning a car because of the high cost of the car, insurance, and maintenance and repair bills after buying a car. There are also other unpredictable costs like parking, speeding tickets, big repairs like replacing the engine and transmission, tow truck towing fees, and random lawsuits after crashing a car into a person, other cars or property like a house.
There are many people with low paying jobs who can't afford cars, and the cost of owning one even if the car runs on electricity which usually cost less than gas. I don't feel most low paying jobs will start paying workers more where they can afford more expensive things like cars and houses.
It maybe more affordable to use public transportation like a bus, tram, train, ferry, taxi,or occasionally rent a car for a few hours, or use a taxi or ride sharing service like Uber or Lyft.
Some workers like computer programmers, web designers, graphic designers, writers, artists, and accountants are working from home, and don't need to always own a car to drive to work because of high speed internet, and more affordable powerful workstation computers and tools which home workers can afford to buy or rent.
It is now possible to buy almost everything from internet shopping sites, and the prices for stuff online is cheaper than retail, so people don't need to own a car to drive to a store to buy stuff if they are willing to wait a few days to weeks for their online shipments to arrive to their home. Renting a car for a short amount of time to drive to a store is cheaper than owning a car for many years.
More people are also using the internet for socializing, and finding information instead of going out with friends all the time, or going to the local library.
