Will Nintendo discontinue the Wii U soon?

It's not selling and some people have mentioned it, but what do you think?

Will Nintendo call it quits, stop making Wii U systems and start working on a new home console soon? Or will they keep it going for the full generation?

I think they might keep it going for another two years maybe three. That's if the sales eventually start to pick up. If they do start working on a new console soon I hope it's better than the Wii U.

I'm sure the sales will pick up. The only real problem with the Wii U is the lack of games. It's starting to get there, but it should NEVER have been released in the first place with so few games. They should have put it off as long as possible, or planned it out better. It's a shame they ended up coming so close to the Xbox One and PS4 releases- I'm thinking Nintendo rushed it to get it out before Sony and Microsoft could steal their thunder, but ended up pulling the rug out from under themselves by having nothing to offer in terms of software.

So long as they start getting a decent install base on the console, and people pick up the new heavy hitting games they've got lined up, I think the Wii U will be fine... If not though, I could see them folding it early 2015, or at least announcing some new plans.

We don't even have Smash Bros. 4 yet. :U Geez. Give it some time.

I'm sure the game will be great I'm a big fan too, but I wouldn't say it's enough to make the Wii U sell more.

If they make another console i sincerely hope that they omit the crappy motion control thing and go back to an actual controller-based system. No more gyroscopic crap. no more motion sensor. Just good ol' fashioned gaming with thumbs and controller and an actual D-pad like the SNES had so fighting games are not a chore as they are on a 360. heck, if they went back to 16-bit gaming like the SNES but added online multiplayer and co-op I'd be all for it. Cheap, inexpensive, and I bet I'm not the only one who would board that flagship.

Honestly, I see no reason to have made the Wii U in the first place. They should have just added an app to the 3DS to work as a controller for the Wii, since that is BASICALLY what the Wii U controller is.

Anyone else feel like the Wii/Wii U reminds you of NES/SNES or is that just me? I find that kind of laughable since it's so ironically similar (slightly updated gameplay experience, more buttons on the controller and shoulder buttons well the Wiimote alone was like an NES controller flipped sideways). I feel like they did that on purpose with the Pro Controller, did anyone else catch that vibe at all? XD But seriously: If it ends in 2015 it'll remind me of the Sega Dreamcast: how it's controller had a screen on it, it was released ahead of the time but then the next gen consoles screwed it over by waiting and BOOM: gone. But then again SEGA screwed up big time with the Saturn so that made sense, well Nintendo's Wii was freaking successful overall. Also: Virtual Console could maybe save it if they actually ADDED stuff to it. But yeah, SEGA just made bad business decisions so that's how the Dreamcast bombed well Nintendo waited until Wii U where they accidentally took the SEGA way out of things. But so far, the console is still standing so that's good. But for how long is the question...

But we have that with the Wii U right now... they even made a Pro Controller for people that want a regular controller. The D-pad on the Pad is actually decent, I used it for Super Metroid and New Super Mario Bros. U and it felt great.

But then we'd be stuck playing 480p games stretched and blurry on our 1080p sets. Nintendo had to adapt to an HD world and they did so by putting a system together that met the minimum requirements.

I think Nintendo will wait to see if Mario Kart + Smash Bros. + Price Drop will reverse their fortunes (which it could). $250 bundle with Mario Kart or Smash Bros. this holiday season would be amazing.

that wasn't what I was saying. they still have the cartoony graphics, touch screen and wii motion plus crap. I am saying to lose all of that. Yeah, sure some of those gameson wii and wii u use a controller like the classic controller, but the focus is primarily games that do not.

What still has cartoony graphics? Touch screen is a non-issue for games that use it right, besides, the benefits of having the secondary screen far exceed the drawbacks. When I feel like playing a Wii U game and my wife wants to watch TV I can simply switch to playing on the gamepad. Also, what games use the Wii Motion Plus crap you speak of?

Also, that last thing you spoke of - Sony has been doing it since the PS3 using the PS Vita, Nintendo didn't do it first or better.

As for cartoony, almost all 1st-party games are overly bright and vibrant and cartoony.

3 games that benefit from it and you want it scrapped?? Why limit yourself (or other gamers)? They have the good old gaming with "thumb and controller and an actual D-pad" so this complaint against the Wii U is pretty moot. RIP Motion+ complaint.

About the remote play... ok? Not sure what relevance that has, I was just stating that having a touch screen isn't a detriment. RIP Touchscreen complaint.

Welcome to Nintendo? I don't know what to say here, seems like an absurd complaint. If you don't want cartoony Nintendo games then don't get cartoony Nintendo games. There are other games to chose from. RIP Cartoony complaint.

Okay, i read the wii list as Wii U because it didn't center when i clicked "Wii U. So, I saw 23 games not 3. I'll give you that. and do NOT be rude with me. "RIP Cartoony complain". I wasn't being rude with you so respect me or you will have a problem. And we were discussing 1st-party. obviously i don't want cartoony so i have a 360.

I suppose I did get a bit carried away. I just saw what you said about the system and realized you lacked experience with it. I merely attempt to enlighten.

yeah that quote is not entirely accurate here lol You should respect me not as a mod but as a member, first and foremost. Good quote though, I like it.

and the point of the topic was will they discontinue it. I merely posted why most people do not like it - not my reasons from experience. I just have no interest in the system because of how it is not heavy online multiplayer friendly like the 360 is.

haha I see now. I have a friend (IRL) that would say the same thing about the Wii.

Honestly I'm pleased with the way the Wii U is right now (as a system). I do believe it needs a price drop though. If I want more robust online features and games I'll just stick to my PC or pick up a PS4/Xbone, but for right now the Wii U is satisfying me.

I just got the Wii U less than a week ago. All I have for it right now is New Super Mario Bros. U. I can see it becoming tiresome soon actually. The only other game I even want for it at the moment is Wind Waker. Right there is where the issue lies. I never had any incentive to want one before it was impulsively bought. But what I have is really fun.

The 3DS just had a huge boost in sales, the difference being they released their usual main stream games, plus the holidays. Pokemon and Zelda have always been great sellers. I specifically bought my 3DS for OoT, my brother got his for X. With my original DS sacrificed for the sake of me being freed from a headlock, I didn't even glance at Nintendo for a good few years, until I heard about OoT. What was the starting price again? 250 or something like that? The thing was crashing and burning. I think the Wii U is taking the same path. It's going to do horrible for quite some time. But then it's going to do amazing once they release the money makers. I'm sure you've all seen what's been released for SSB MK8 and Hyrule Warriors. Planning on missing any of that? Then, when it happens, the main stream LoZ? Who's really sitting here and thinking, 'damn that spin off looks so good that LoZ isn't even worth buying!' None of us are, no one is. And when it does happen, will you be able to withstand seeing this board filled with posts about how awesome it is? When those games are released, it'll boost sales no matter what, extending the life of the Wii U. While Nintendo is pretty good with it, are you absolutely positive that the next gen console will be backwards compatible? What if it's not? You'll either end up never playing the diamonds in the rocks, or you'll end up putting up some serious cash for both consoles.

Yeah I'd still recommend waiting to buy a Wii U though, nothing extraordinary is out yet.

Just gotta think of it like that Gameboy that survived that bombing, Nintendo can withstand quite a nasty burn.

I'm a blabber mouth ._.

They won't drop the Wii U, it probably won't have the life span of its rivals, but they wouldn't want people to get burned, like they were with the Saturn.
