Starting from Super Mario Galaxy 2, it looks like that Nintendo is trying to put 2D and 3D Mario games together. For example, this game features many side scrolling courses similar to 2D Mario games:

And also, the course selection screen is more visualized, resembling world maps in 2D Mario Games.

Eventually, Nintendo released Super Mario 3D Land, a game "that is a 3D Mario Game that plays like a 2D Mario game".

So, do you think it's the end of 2D Side-scrolling Mario Games? Or do you think 2D and 3D games will continue coexisting ? Comment!
 
I don't think it's the end, I just think it's another game type. Super Mario 64 was the same, yet they still produced side scrolling games like New Super Mario Bros. I think Nintendo will continue both lines of gaming until one proves to be a non-seller, but I think people will buy Mario because it's Mario so both lines will continue on for a while. I didn't put a vote in for this reason.
 
I like both, but maybe in the future, a new Mario game called ''Super Mario 4D Land'' may be made. Depends if a Nintendo 4DS is made.
 
No, it's not the entire future.
Sure they can make sequels to this game, but they're not going to completely toss the 3d game type entirely. It's a huge selling portion of the mario series for them. They're not going to just throw that away.
 
i doubt it, cuz their still making the new super mario bros mii game, id hate to not have side scrollers
 
I hope not, 3D was a fresh new idea. But please... don't bring it back.. Give me more games like 64 and Sunshine.

i agree, i prefer 64 and sunshine to galaxy 1 and 2 and 3D land

Seriously? Do you really think they will make a 4DS? And what excactly would it include?

On topic: I like both 3D and 2D mario, so I hope they don't stop making one of them-
