Vagrant Story was a very unique game by Square that came out near the end of the life of the PlayStation. It was a deviation from the usual Square RPG because it had a very different combat system. It was a cross between an action and a turn-based system. It allowed players to be able to take their time and formulate a strategy while also making players be constantly on their feet.

The cutscenes weren't the standard Square affair too. Only the intro cinematics were CG. The rest of the cinematics used the game's engine.

The story? It's a tale for adults and may not interest young players but it's intricate and interesting and really worth playing through. The characters are diverse and have strong personalities. Do you think that if Vagrant Story were released now, it would be a hit?

never heard of it, looks like it was a good play.
Seriously? Hmm, it was one of the best games in the year that it was released. I do think that it didn't get a lot of popularity since it didn't have the Final Fantasy name. But it's such a shame that people didn't notice. It's such a gem of a game and Square should be commended for trying to be different and being able to pull it off with flying colors.

The closest game that I could compare Vagrant story to is Final Fantasy XII. I think that they drew inspiration from Vagrant Story when they made FFXII.

I have never heard of it before now but it looks like it might be fun to play.  I do like the more intricate games anyway, surprised I have not seen it until now.
