So what do you think of it?

The design is kind of boring. I guest Microsoft choose a basic design to save money on the case like how more affordable desktop PCs from brands like HP and Acer usually have a basic design to save money

I like that it has a lot of ventilation air cooling holes on the top of the console, so it may run less hot when playing 4K games at 60 frames per second and higher.

The square vertical design of the case is good for a small tables, and desk where horizontal desk space is limited.

The design looks similar to a tower desktop PC.

Uninspired design imo, basically a tower PC.

This Xbox also looks similar to a workstation PC or a small networking file server which are usually found in offices and networking rooms at companies.

I think Microsoft may choose to release a plain looking console to see if many buyers will still buy a console with a basic looking plain case with a black cube design which may cost less to make than a nicer console case with more rounded corners, round case walls, a better looking logo, nicer air cooling ventilation hole design, touchscreen lcd, digital clock, more buttons, and more lights.

I don't get why they give up on console and double down on PC towers.

Maybe Microsoft wanted to save money by using a basic tower case like how most Dell and HP tower computers use a plain rectangle case to save money because they can fit cheap motherboards, hard drives, and cooling fans in the rectangle case. Microsoft can use regular size computer and electronic parts like CPU, RAM and 2.5 to 3.5 inch SSD or hard drives which are cheaper to make and install than laptop and mobile/tablet parts which are more expensive.

PC towers have a better air cooling system than most laptops, so Microsoft can increase the CPU, RAM and vdeo card maximum speed without having overheating problems.

Microsoft can always sell the Xbox Seroes X as a Surface Windows 10 desktop tower PC, and let users use prograns like Photoshop, and hardware like Printers on their Xbox.

Read some stuff from gamespot interview and dualshockers:

When the console itself was revealed there was a lot of talk surrounding the design and shape of the console as well as confirmation that it can be placed vertically or horizontally. Spencer told GameSpot that the GPU is 8x faster than the base Xbox One and twice that of the Xbox One X. The CPU is to be 4x more capable and with an ultra-fast NVMe solid-state drive.

GameSpot was able to find out some details surrounding the cooling system within the rectangular behemoth. Spencer confirms that there is one central fan cooling the whole system, the fan being visible through the top grate. “What this design does, with the size of the fan that we built around, is it lets us match how quiet the Xbox One X is with all that power inside of the box,” he explains.

The head of Xbox goes on to describe that he’s been using the Xbox Series X at home and that those that have seen it in action haven’t noticed it until he’s pointed it out because the acoustic profile helps keep it somewhat low profile. “If I don’t point it out, it just sits there and plays video games the way I want it to and I never hear it, just like how I don’t hear my [Xbox One] X.”

In the full interview, both Spencer and Director of Program Management for Team Xbox, Jason Ronald state that the Xbox Series X is no louder than the Xbox One X in their own homes.

While Spencer wouldn’t delve into specifics surrounding the cooling system he does tell GameSpot that the single fan is “able to spin at a low enough rate that it is whisper-quiet.” and that it has “no secondary fans, probably just passive coil”.

It's probably quiet at first... but give it time to get some use and dust in there. See what happens then. Or later in the generation when they're running games that push the hardware more and thus generate more heat.

Though the box is pretty large looking so maybe there's a lot of air space in there to dissipate heat.

that would drown it out.

I remember that some older tube TVs also have loud speakers at a low volume setting, so they will drown out Disc drive sounds very easily.

Tube TV sometimes make some static electricity buzzing sound which can help drown up disc sounds.

  • Next Generation Custom Processor: Xbox Series X is our most powerful console ever powered by our custom designed processor leveraging AMD’s latest Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures. Delivering four times the processing power of an Xbox One and enabling developers to leverage 12 TFLOPS of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) performance—twice that of an Xbox One X and more than eight times the original Xbox One. Xbox Series X delivers a true generational leap in processing and graphics power with cutting edge techniques resulting in higher frame rates, larger, more sophisticated game worlds, and an immersive experience unlike anything seen in console gaming.
  • Variable Rate Shading (VRS): Our patented form of VRS empowers developers to more efficiently utilize the full power of the Xbox Series X. Rather than spending GPU cycles uniformly to every single pixel on the screen, they can prioritize individual effects on specific game characters or important environmental objects. This technique results in more stable frame rates and higher resolution, with no impact on the final image quality.
  • Hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing: You can expect more dynamic and realistic environments powered by hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing—a first for console gaming. This means true-to-life lighting, accurate reflections and realistic acoustics in real time as you explore the game world.
    Immersion in an instant
The next console generation will be defined by more playing and less waiting. And when play begins, we know many gamers demand ultra-low latency to be as immersed and precise as possible. To this end, the team analyzed every step between player and game, from controller to console to display, and asked how we could make it faster.

  • SSD Storage: With our next-generation SSD, nearly every aspect of playing games is improved. Game worlds are larger, more dynamic and load in a flash and fast travel is just that – fast.
  • Quick Resume: The new Quick Resume feature lets you continue multiple games from a suspended state almost instantly, returning you to where you were and what you were doing, without waiting through long loading screens.
  • Dynamic Latency Input (DLI): We’re optimizing latency in the player-to-console pipeline starting with our Xbox Wireless Controller, which leverages our high bandwidth, proprietary wireless communication protocol when connected to the console. With Dynamic Latency Input (DLI), a new feature which synchronizes input immediately with what is displayed, controls are even more precise and responsive.
  • HDMI 2.1 Innovation: We’ve partnered with the HDMI forum and TV manufacturers to enable the best gaming experience through features such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). ALLM allows Xbox One and Xbox Series X to automatically set the connected display to its lowest latency mode. VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate to the game’s frame rate, maintaining smooth visuals without tearing. Ensuring minimal lag and the most responsive gaming experience.
  • 120 fps Support: With support for up to 120 fps, Xbox Series X allows developers to exceed standard 60 fps output in favor of heightened realism or fast-paced action.
The Next Generation of Game Compatibility

The benefits of the next console generation extend in every direction, bringing greater visual fidelity and improved loading speeds to your existing gaming legacy, in addition to new games. We’re continuing our commitment to compatibility with Xbox Series X and investing in technology that makes game ownership easier across generations.

  • Four generations of gaming: Our commitment to compatibility means existing Xbox One games, including backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, look and play better than ever before. Your favorite games, including titles in Xbox Game Pass, benefit from steadier frame rates, faster load times, and improved resolution and visual fidelity—all with no developer work required. Your Xbox One gaming accessories also come forward with you.
  • Smart Delivery: This technology empowers you to buy a game once and know that—whether you are playing it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X—you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on. We’re making the commitment to use Smart Delivery on all our exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles, including Halo Infinite, ensuring you only have to purchase a title once in order to play the best available version for whichever Xbox console they choose to play on. This technology is available for all developers and publishers, and they can choose to use it for titles that will be release on Xbox One first and come to the Xbox Series X later.
  • Xbox Game Pass: In addition to games from across four generations of consoles, our leading game subscription service, Xbox Game Pass, will continue to have our first-party games, like Halo Infinite, included at their launch. We look forward to millions of you experiencing the Xbox Game Pass portfolio and immersing yourselves in a deep library of high-quality games, playing those you love now and also discovering your next great adventure.

Nice as the 1 TB is, I know they need at least 2 TB.

They have a memory card like nvme ssd system to increase the storage size. Will be the same with PS5 I believe.

The GPU is really powerful, more powerful than the RTX 2080. Though Nvidia will be releasing the RTX 3000 series this year I think.
