Police arrested a 44-year-old male resident of Ayagawa, Kagawa on October 9 for allegedly modifying PlayStation 3 consoles and then selling them. The police allege that the suspect, a part-time worker named Tadaaki Abe, violated the Trademark Act, the Unfair Competition Prevention Act, and other laws.

The modifications supposedly allow users to copy games on consoles so that they can play without having to insert the original discs again. The suspect was allegedly selling the modified consoles for 15,555 yen (about US$140) per unit via an online auction site. Police had discovered the auction in July 2018, and tracked Abe down through that.
