Sony has announced that users will be able to change their PlayStation Network online ID later today in the United States, and from tomorrow, April 11, in Europe.
The online ID change feature for PSN, announced on the PlayStation Blog, will be accessible from a web browser, and free to use for the first change. Any further changes will cost $9.99 / £7.99, or $4.99 / £3.99 for PlayStation Plus members.
Should you decide your new ID is not what you want, you can change as many times as you’d like, or revert back to your original ID for free. Your old ID will always be available to you, as other users cannot claim it should you rename your profile.
To aid your friends on PSN, your old ID may be displayed next to your new ID on your profile for 30 days.
It’s worth noting that there is a caveat involved in the name change process. While “the large majority of most actively played PS4 games support the feature”, games published before April 1, 2018 may not be compatible with new online IDs. Playing these games may mean you still have to use your old username, and there’s a chance that you could lose access to DLC.
Sony has put together a list of tested games that are sorted into those with no issues, those with some issues, and those with critical issues. Those in the latter, most serious camp include popular games like Bloodborne, Dark Souls II and III, Grand Theft Auto V, and Warframe. There is no individual information regarding these titles, but it's worth noting if you play them frequently that problems may arise.
