Your view on family gatherings?

I sometimes have family gatherings around the holidays or special occasions. I don't hate them but I am not always fond of them.
 
As long as everyone can be civil, it's good to spend time with everyone.
I don't get why people compare, try to show-off, criticise others during the gatherings to be honest
