Your views on asking for donations on YouTube to help make videos?

I don't have a problem with YouTube video makers who ask for donations to make videos on YouTube. I think asking for donations is better than uploading Sponsored videos like a Sponsored Video Game Review from a video game maker who paid a YouTuber to make a positive video about a video game which is not very good.

If the video channel has no videos, or one or two low quality videos, and there is a donation link, I feel they should not link to a donation website if they did nothing, or uploaded very few quality videos to YouTube.
 
If they have good videos I would be willing to donate, as long as they don't feed me some sob story.
 
I'm not overly fond of the whole donate to make content thing going on right now. It's kinda blown up way too much. Everyone has their own patreon account and it just seems overly excessive.
