What would be considered a pipe dream which would only come true by bringing all seven dragonballs together and making the faithful wish, has happened today.

Microsoft has announced that games using Xbox Live will now support cross-network play - meaning players on Xbox can play online with those with the same game on PS4, for example. One of the first games to take advantage of that change will be Psyonix's Rocket League.

Not all games will allow for cross-network play which has been made clear that "it’s up to game developers to support this feature". Xbox Live players will also have the option to play only with those also on Xbox Live.

From what I learned Sony kind of has to do the same thing on their end to really make this work, but we should be seeing this in full swing in a few years.
See Microsoft made out like they came up with this idea and made out like they were backing Playstation into a corner trying to make them support it. Truth is PS4 already supports this, and there are examples of PS3 games that already support this - long before Microsoft implemented the idea. In fact, games like FF14 wasn't released on Xbox One due to their unwillingness of supporting cross play in the past. Playstation already supported this with numerous titles (FF14 and Rocket League the biggest examples) - more here.

So, why didn't this make the news? Why didn't everyone talk about it until now?
They didn't really bother to make a big deal about it - for some reason. It is something to get excited about but they never really bothered announcing it as a big deal. Fact is that Xbox is actually late to the party, they are just the ones to make the most noise about it.

That's pretty cool though! I hope that this makes some online games last longer now that you have potentially a bigger player base.
