Yes, I would care if a smartphone or tablet can or can't be used with a controller, or keyboard and mouse for gaming.

I would not buy a tablet or smartphone where it is not possible to use a gaming controller, or keyboard and mouse for gaming because even the cheapest $100 or cheaper tablets and smartphones from Cheap Chinese/Asian brands have Bluetooth wireless connection and USB On-The-Go which can be used to connect a gamepad controller, keyboard and mouse, and speaker to the tablet.

There are also mobile games like Modern Combat, Goat Simulator, Need for Speed Most Wanted, and Fighting games which are more fun to play with a controller or keyboard and mouse instead of a touchscreen.

It wouldn't matter to me because I don't really use my phone for gaming. I have a Nintendo 3DS if I want to take my gaming on the go and I don't have to worry about playing draining the battery on my phone.

I agree gliding fingers over a screen would not feel as good as a controller.

I think users are less likely to drop a phone or tablet when you use a controller, and stand or holder to hold your tablet or smartphone.

A controller is also a needed accessory if you plan to sit farther away from your tablet or smartphone or plug your phone/tablet into a TV to play while sitting on a chair farther away from a TV.

Well sometimes I care for the purposes of relaxing gaming and easily to move the character with the help of mouse and keyboard.Unlike in just tapping the character and moving the cursor is not so comfortable and the screen will be occupied by your hand. But it's still handy without keyboard and mouse you can play anywhere.

Nowadays external controllers for tablet and smartphones are available in the market. The gaming world now has more options for better gaming. Also some of them are really cheap and affordable that's why you see more gamer's on tablet and smartphones devices.
