Anyone think this new store will finally put Steam in its place?

I feel Steam would still be more popular because people are used to Steam, and made a lot of friends on Steam.

but people have to go where the games are though.

Steam does have a lot games like most newer PC Games are publish on Steam.
I feel I rather pick Steam because there is less risk of Steam shutting down in a few years, or getting worse. I feel online game stores shutting down in the future is a huge concern for people who spent hundreds to thousands of dollars in PC games, and DLC.

They need more good games and free ones on Epic Games the ones they have or I have seen the free ones have been updated for while.

I agree free games are very important. Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2 are popular free games on Steam.
I feel free trials for paid games would be nice as well.

Why do people hate Epic Games Store? Is it because of Fortnite? Or is it something else? For me, maybe it's because players weren't expecting a game to be released in EGS. I mean, nobody was relatively mad when EA and Ubisoft released their own games in their own stores. (Or are people just bandwagoning?)

sounds like Steam needs to step up to the plate.

Steam should have that.
Tim Sweeney just tweeted a series of tweets explaining why they are so into getting exclusives for their game store:
For example, after years of great work by independent stores (excluding big publishers like EA-Activision-Ubi), none seem to have reached 5% of Steam’s scale. Nearly all have more features than Epic; and the ability to discount games is limited by various external pressures.

The 30% store tax usually exceeds the entire profits of the developer who built the game that’s sold. This is a disastrous situation for developers and publishers alike, so I believe the strategy of exclusives is proportionate to the problem.

Will the resulting 18% increase in developer and publisher revenue benefit gamers? Such gains are generally split among (1) reinvestment, (2) profit, and (3) price reduction. The more games are competing with each other, the more likely the proceeds are to go to (1) and (3).
