Okay so Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel have been out for some time now and I feel like it's had reasonably enough time to see a wide spectrum of opinions.
That being said here's mine:
Super Mario Galaxy was fantastic. Continuing Mario onward in his escapades of growing... land... schemes? (That is to say Super Mario Land, Super Mario World, Super Mario Galaxy) Anyways, without getting to review-esque on you I loved it. The "Adventure Field Design" if you will was fun offered plenty of exploration and just enjoyable in general. And that's just the adventure field. The mission design and the level size and the new ideas and suits. I positively adored it. That being said some things in this game were not exactly as... good as I'd hoped (Luigi, End-Game reward). They just felt like... Nintendo produced this great game and then quit when they finished the first part. Also the boss battles were too easy.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 however I was less fond of. For me the sequel kind of felt like... Hangover 2. Yeah it was fun, yeah it was a good play, but it felt like Nintendo was way too comfortable resting on their laurels and releasing something that had the highlight of being nostalgic. Like I said, I had fun, it just... lacked... a lot. And the adventure field was relatively pitiful. How is it that you went from flying around on a spaceship the size of the mall here in my town, to flying a round on a rock the shape of marios head? It just was displeasing to me.

So that's all I have. In short Super Mario Galaxy d('_')b Super Mario Galaxy 2 [Insert two thumbs sideways smiley]
Your opinons?

Well, I liked both, but in the end the "collect the 120 green stars at the end" in the 2nd left a bad taste in my mouth.

Still haven't beat number 2. Hell, haven't even picked it up in a while. Really didn't feel the same compared to the first. :/

I agree with Flandre.

I never played the second one, so I don't really know. But I still go with the first part because I like the sound track from there more than the second one.

I loved both of them.I liked the 2nd one a little bit better, but it felt like it had less replay value.

I liked both of them. As for what's best, not sure. Galaxy felt more epic, because the experience felt more new and innovative. It just felt like a more interesting game. Galaxy 2 was good, but more of a perfection to the formula of the first, hence while fun, it felt a bit... sterile, a bit lacking in soul, after a while.

Oh geez, I can't really pick between the two of them... in terms of time spent on both of them, Mario Galaxy would be the one. Mostly because I also replayed the game quite a lot from start to finish, whereas I haven't even tried replaying Mario Galaxy 2 at all. I'd say Mario Galaxy wins, but only because it was the first of it's kind, and for the reasons that Nin and others have stated here already; it was fun, but yeah, I didn't want to replay it.

Though I do replay certain levels from time to time, heh.
