Social media sites nearly killed off forums. I'm glad it didn't because I wouldn't know what to do today as I'm not freely into using social media.

I wouldn't say that, but it did knee cap them for sure.
It kinda put a dent in their activity, but it didn’t necessary kill them off. A lot of niche forums are still doing quite well.

Yeah, hence the reason why I said it nearly but wasn't 100% successful. If it was, we wouldn't still have forums today.
Do you think reddit is one of the sites that is hurting the growth of forums?

Reddit is a forum, but if anything I think it has led to people realizing that having your own platform is worth it in the end.
We just need to see more open source forum software. I am not sure what's is going on with MyBB, however I do think it was smart of the former devs to release their plugins on Github, this way they can update when they feel like it or someone else can do the same.

I consider reddit a fully blown forum because it's not a social media site like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the rest.
