Today Nintendo has given a price cut to their Wii U system plus reduced the 3DS in both price and features with the announcement of 2DS. Do you think this is some smart move by Nintendo to undercut the up coming PS4/One launch or are they doing what they have to in order to stay afloat?

Maybe Nintendo decided to give Wii U owners a better value for their money by making the Wii U cost $299, so gamers have more money left over for games, and accessories, and they made a 2DS for gamers who don't like 3D, or folding screens, but don't want to pay the higher price for the 3DS since they don't like 3D or folding screens, so the lower price 2DS would be better suited for them.

I don't think it's really anything crazy. All systems will drop their prices after a given amount of time. I'd say nintendo is not in trouble but they are taking a good fall. They really need to start conforming to the graphics level of the competitors though. In the past they've been able to beat them using all of the childish lovable heroes but times have changed.

They need to just sit and hope that xbox720 crash and burns out of the competition so they can make a move and create something much more interesting. The Wii U was not really different than the Wii. If you take a look at ps1 to ps2, ps2 to ps3, then you've got serious change. They need to sit down and realize......."We're just not cool enough, we need to put some pressure on getting a little RAW".

I'm pretty sure Nintendo said a month ago they would do no price cuts, but companies these days don't seem to act as one. Also Nintendo has stated they have no interest in competing with sony or MS. They just want to do what they do, which to a degree earns the money.

I think Nintendo trying to compete against the Higher Quality graphics of a Gaming PC like how PS3, and Xbox 360 make graphical intensive games to compete with PC may make Nintendo have fewer console buyers since Nintendo have to sell their console for more money like $400-500 because of using more expensive faster parts to build its console, and hope that enough people will buy their consoles for a higher prices.

I remember when the PS3 was $600, it did not sell very well compared to the Wii, and Xbox 360 which sold more consoles in the US because of the lower prices for the Wii, Xbox 360 Arcade and regular 360.

Microsoft also made the Xbox 360 Arcade which sold for $100 less because it did not come with HD video cables, the controller was wired instead of wireless, and you need to buy your own memory card or external Xbox 360 hard drive for the Xbox 360 Arcade which many poorer and casual Xbox 360 gamers bought.

I think Nintendo mainly focusing on Games, would make the Wii U, and 3DS/2DS the most popular consoles in the next console generations. It may not have as many hardcore gamers like PC, PS4, and One, but it would have many less hardcore gamers, and Nintendo fans.

Wii U is still the most sold next generation console because the PS4, and Xbox One are not released yet.

The Xbox One, and PS4 may not be as popular as the Wii U since they cost more than the Wii U, and the price of Beginner Gaming PCs are $100-200 more expensive than the One, and PS4, so a lot of hardcore console gamers may buy or build a cheaper Gaming PC, and Steam may make all its PC games work well on a TV when people hook their PC or laptop up to a TV with a HDMI cable, and use a regular USB or wireless gamepad controller to play their PC, and Steam games on their TV like a console. Steam is also coming out with Steambox which may take away more gamers from the PS4, and One since it is a Gaming PC which is also a Game console, so you get the best of both worlds.

PC and Wii U multiplayer is also free to play without the need for $50-60 subscriptions like Xbox Live, and PSN Plus.

Over the next few years, the cost of a Gaming PC may be cheaper than a PS4, and Xbox One because of the falling prices of computer RAM, Processors, hard drives, video cards, and motherboards. Plus, people can build or buy a gaming PC with just the parts they need instead of like buying a Xbox One which comes bundled with Kinect, 2 HDMI ports, 3 operating systems, a headset, or the PS4 which requires you to buy a controller with a touchpad, move light, speaker, and other things which brings up the cost of the console by $100.

I don't think nintendo is failing. Comparing nintendo to Microsoft and Sony is apples and oranges so to speak. As a primarily PC gamer I agree with froggy that gaming pc's are becoming more accessible and affordable. However, many people just can't see themselves playing games on a PC and are used to consoles to the point where they won't switch over even if it made the most sense.

Nintendo is fine, but they're in serious need of some new unique games. If they did that right I think people who are more inclined to go after fancy graphics and fps type crowd would pay attention to nintendo... maybe.

I think many console gamers are also PC Gamers since Minecraft on PC is the most popular version of Minecraft, and certain types of games like Real Time Strategy like Starcraft, Warcraft, and MMORPG like World of Warcraft seem more easy, and fun to play on PCs because of the item management for games, and short cut key combinations to make gaming on RTS, and MMORPG games a lot faster to switch items, weapons, and spells.

Cheaper Gaming Laptops could make more people switch over to PC now that more games support controllers, and Steam has Big Picture mode which make it easier to play games with a controller on Steam, and use the Steam store with a controller.

Nintendo has an advantage because they are the oldest console makers still around. They have.been going since the 8 bit era so they have a lot more experiance. Nintendo will never fail

I wish Nintendo could focus more on better Wii U games than the 2DS. If you don't want 3D, you can simply turn it off. But I guess the Nintendo is trying to attract a younger audience with the 2DS.

that is the point with the 2DS but I agree they need to shift focus to the U.

I think the 2Ds is mainly aimed to parents concerned with Kids overriding the parent protection to disable 3D and the dismantling of the handheld hinge by excessive force and constant use of their little angels.

I think Nintendo knows what its doing and even if many, myself included, found 2DS a redundant product, releasing it with pokemon and it being cheaper will push new and undecided customers to try it out. At some point those 2DS users might decide to upgrade better than if they never tried the console in the first place, also it serves a hook to make them spend in games and stuff.

The Wii U is taking it slowly because Nintendo has learned from his past about trying to bring their strongest cards too early in the game. They instead have teased us with the knowledge of the developing of big cards and kept us on the look for it. most of the Wii U games I care for have not been released yet, but I knew their existence for a while.

The only thing is bothering really is the overuse of the Mario & Luigi franchise in the meanwhile. Add one twist and release the game, add a Luigi download of it. Nintendo needs more variety and new franchises to emerge. Even Pikmin is now a decade old.

I think the Wii U has potential to increase it's sales once parents catch on that it's the new Wii and kids will want the new Nintendo games coming out for it.  Christmas will carry the Wii U all right I think, but nothing drastic, but 2014 with Mario Kart and Smash Bros.  and hopefully some surprises, I have high hopes for the Wii U sales.

Regardless, Nintendo aren't going anywhere.  The 3DS is killing the console market.  The Wii U might do a gamecube and come through in the end, I don't think it'll do a virtual boy and completely flop out.  It'll pick up I bet. Once the hype for Ps4/Xbone dies down parents will look at the cheaper option.

Parents who are gamers maybe more likely to buy a Wii U, so they can also play Nintendo games which they played during their child hood with their kids.

But, there is also the Ouya, Gamestick, Madcatz Mojo, Gamepop, and many other cheaper game console options which may make some parents buy an alternative gaming device. Plus, these cheaper consoles can play games which parents already bought on Google Play and the Amazon App Store for Android once they install the Google Play, and Amazon App store app onto these consoles which is not hard to do since there are How-To videos on how to install the Amazon App store, and Google Play on these consoles.

PC, Mac, and tablets like Wikipad and Kindle Fire may also make it more difficult for the more expensive consoles to grow faster because a lot of people are fine with the selection of games on PC, Mac, and mobile devices since there are millions of people who play games like League of Legends, Dota 2, World of Warcraft, Candy Crush, and Temple Run.

I know when the next smash bros game drops it will move a lot of Wii U systems specially if the game is well reviewed.
Agreed. It will eventually be competitive but for now it's useless.
