This was announced about a month or so ago that Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP. Meaning me... and probably a crap load of other people. Yes, they gave a warning, but why the hell did they just do it? A majority of people use XP and those greedy sons of bit- mother fu- *Inhales* *Exhales* they just want people to go buy a Windows 8 computer. Which I have no problem with Windows 8. It's kind of cool. It's just bs that they're making people go out and buy new computers. They aren't cheap ya' know.

"But DYL I have a Windows XP computer and nothing has happened."

Good point, but it will. Microsoft is also dropping their antivirus from XP making it more vulnerable to viruses so people can steal your info. They're basically backing you into a corner. On top of that XP will no longer support Internet Explorer 8, but who cares because senseable people have IE10 by now.

Gah I'm just in a fit of rage because my parents just bought a new Windows 8 computer for themselves to replace their laptop when they should have put it in here to replace the MAIN desktop. OMFG! So yeah if you have a Windows XP either buy a Windows 8 computer or keep on your toes about viruses.

Windows XP is thirteen years old and was released in 2001, and they've had Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and now Windows 8.1 released since then. You can't expect them to continue to support an outdated OS that's getting so far behind it won't run newer software well anymore. You also don't necessarily have to go and buy an entirely new machine. You can likely just upgrade some of the components of what you've got if the computer you have won't run 8. I was miffed about having Windows 8 too after hearing all the stuff about it, but since getting my Surface Pro 2 that comes with it, it's really not all that different at all especially with the updates it's received.

Technically support via Service Packs ended for XP in 2009, eight years after it was released, but Microsoft was nice enough to continue to release security patches for a further 4 years since so many people were still using it despite Vista and Windows 7 being out. Microsoft usually only supports it's OS's for about ten years after release. It's been known for months now that they were ending support, so it really shouldn't be a surprise... XP was a great OS, but I completely understand needing to stop devoting time and energy to updating something that had a new version released in 2007, 2009, and 2012/2013. :/

Your point about antivirus is basically a nonissue. There's plenty of free antiviruses that will still work on XP.

And Microsoft is even supporting embedded versions of XP, typically used with ATMs and the like, until the end 2016. They have gone way above and beyond for support of an ancient OS. Even Ubuntu only supports it's Long Term Support versions for 5 years.

I got a warning about two weeks ago on XP, though that's just a back up computer and our main one has Windows 8.1.

Well sure you upgrade it, but that still costs money. I'm poor and my parents are too stingy to buy anything about it. There's better ways to go about getting people to buy a new computer and this is probably the worst way.

But they aren't doing it to get people to buy a new computer. It's old. They've supported it far longer then any of their previous versions, and far longer then any other OS maker supports any of theirs. It's not some power play- it's just time to move on. It's the same thing as how Nintendo stops making games for their old systems, eventually you just have to stop supporting your old stuff.

Woah dude. Senseable people don't use IE lol. But yeah the whole thing kinda sucks but it is old. My laptop wasn't that expensive and I got it brand new. Of course I did get it on black friday but the original price was about 200 something and that wouldn't be too hard to save up.

DYL, you say you are poor, but unless your income is literally nothing, that isn't an issue. I built a computer myself on £5/week from my pocket money, and birthday/christmas gifts. Around £400 total. If it comes to it, just back up your data on a good USB drive (32GB is around £10), and torrent a version of windows 7 and upgrade to that. Hell, get Linux for free legally. There are tons of options and it's not that difficult.

DYL, seriously, man. That is what computers do. Every operating system does it. it is called "updating". They go obsolete after a while. Same as how Nintendo is not making games for the NES anymore and you need to buy a Wii U if you want the latest games by them. Seriously, the only thing you are going to get from further pursuing a senseless whiny post like this will be ridicule and arguments from just about anyone. Case and point how the current replies have gone.

Well I money I get goes into my college fund so I'm actually getting negative income. Why do I need to back my data up? Shouldn't it just stay on there if I download it and install it or whatever it is I have to do?

Also this wasn't a whiny topic. It was a heads up for people who have Windows XP.

It would stay on there, but if you install linux, you wouldn't be able to access it because Linux would be installed in a different portion of the hard drive to Windows. I think. I'm not too experienced with setting up OSes (only done it twice in my life) Either that, or you might want to simply wipe the drive entirely to have a easier time installing linux.

Just get Windows 7

which will be obsolete within two years as well.

and DYL, all you did was complain in every post - that is whining.

Just get Windows 7

This, or Windows 8 like I have (unless you don't like Windows 8).

Which is unfortunate since i like it tons better than 8 :(

Windows 7 was beautiful. I wish they would just make Windows 7 be their desktop OS and let Windows 8 be their mobile OS (you know, kinda like how it used to be!).
