You cannot view this content. The times during which this content can be viewed have been restricted

Seriously Nintendo? Are you really this naive? Not only do you have an account system which presumably records the age of any Nintendo Network account user, but this does as much to deter underage kids from buying M rated games as a lead balloon does at flying.

Really, it kind of falls apart immediately when you consider that:

  1. Kids have days they're allowed to stay up late, even in fairly restrictive families. So I guess they'll have to wait until Summer Holiday, or half term, or Easter, or Christmas, or their Birthday to buy a digital copy of Black Ops 2 or ZombiU.
  2. Not all kids have a bed time before 11pm.
  3. Many adults who'd buy or view this content have an actual day job and can't be up between 11pm and 3am because of work related reasons.
  4. Some adults might do this minor thing called 'night shift', in which they're pretty much screwed.
  5. Parental controls work as well as a chocolate tea pot.
Here's what Nintendo of Europe says about it:

As an additional precaution to make sure that minors cannot access content which is inappropriate for their age.

Nintendo has always aimed to offer gameplay experiences suited to all age groups, observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries.

So, does everyone else think this is a ridiculous and ineffective policy?

you can get on of u set ur birth date to make u 18+

Why not? You're all being overly-critical about this.

I had a feeling you'd be opposing the general consensus, rofl.

But to answer that, the main reason is "What's the point?". It's more of a disadvantage than an advantage and Nintendo is doing what they shouldn't have to do to this degree, which is restricting what content people (children in particular, obviously) can play.

I am fairly certain parental controls would have the option to block inappropriate content such as this anyway, so there's no need to force it down our throats if it's not even age-based and just applies to everyone.

It's up to concerned parents to monitor their goddamn children. Nintendo shouldn't have to do this, it's just so pointless, as Nin stated.

THAT SAID, this is only in Europe and it's only blocking R18+ content. There aren't many games out there at that rating on the eShop (as far as I know, at the time of writing this), so there probably isn't a noticeable disadvantage at the moment. It's just somewhat of an unnecessary inconvenience. You could say complaining about this is a first world problem, but at the same time, come on, it's just a little bit stupid.

No, this rule applies to every age group.

Glad you understood what he said, because I sure didn't.

Kids like you are the reason additional measure like this are being put into place. Just play by the rules and stop trying to cheat the system and they wouldn't feel the need to put extra restrictions on things.

glad i dont plan on buying full retail games digitaly anyways! It's kinda dumb to IMO.
Not really. I get $5 back for every $50 I spend in the eShop on my Deluxe Wii U. That means every full retail game is $5 cheaper. Also, I recently filled a second bookcase of games, so I would just be taking up more space by getting more physical copies. Oh, and there is also the benefit of not having to get up and change out the discs (the Wii U TV remote already makes it where I can do everything else for set up from my bed on a single controller, so why not get rid of the one thing that makes me move around the room?).

Sure, I still have a soft spot for physical copies, but more and more I am understanding the appeal of digital copies.

I said in my opinion. What maybe be right for me may not be right for some,ya know? i hate that you don't really own the game when you buy digitaly and I bet its $5 cheaper becuz of no packaging. I'll buy 1 full retail game from eshop so my digital deluxe promotion doesn't go to waste My WiiU is like 3 away from me so changind disc isn't a biggy and I like being able to trade, sell, giving, receiving and loan games with others. Oh and physical games can become valuable overtime!
