People mostly focus on the gaming section of Sony, which is apparently healthy, but the rest of Sony is weighed down by other divisions like their TV and PC business (they just sold off the PC business). Fortunately for Sony, all the gaming media cares about is their gaming division. Looking at the whole picture shows that Sony is in a much more dire position than Nintendo.
What's funny though is that the next potential Microsoft CEO (I believe they got a new CEO relatively recently, I'm not sure if it was the same guy I'm referring to, but I can check.) wants to close down all the 'unnecessary' parts of Microsoft, which would basically include anything that isn't the OS, which is amusing since the last one didn't do so hot. The relevance is that all those markets that Microsoft is branched into is what secures their position, they've got so many areas to depend on to keep them afloat, if they get rid of it all, then they'll make it infinitely easier for a competitor to thrown them over. Microsoft has basically been 'the OS' since PC's came about. Mac is certainly around, absolutely, but it's not even near the majority with personal computers and businesses who depend on Windows. But if Apple or Google or another company were to truly work and make an OS that the world decided was what they needed and adopted it in mass, Microsoft really wouldn't have anything left to back them up, either while they push their competition up or find a different market. If you're not making sales then any expenditure is a loss.
I don't expect that guy got the job, but it's the same concept for Sony. Their other markets aren't doing well, but they're trying. Clearly not with the PC, but the others they're trying. Their gaming section should absolutely be top priority while they try to find other things to help them gain profits and stay afloat.
Neither companies are looking pristine (Nintendo and Sony,) though I have a lot of faith Nintendo is going to use the 3DS greatly if the Wii U doesn't take on. It would be very wise as it's an easily accessible and very popular system. I think they can handle themselves, and I truly think Sony can too, they're in a bad position and it's likely to get worse until they're in position to make grand changes, and that doesn't come fast. As for Microsoft, I know less of their situation, they've had issues with Windows 8 and the launch of Xbox One, and other things, but then it would be easy to assume that they're going to be less affected by that than Nintendo or Sony would when their flagship items go ignored just with how much Microsoft does. Let's just say they're in shambles to shake things up, why not?
