So, was the Wii U a good idea?

Just out of curiosity, do you think this console was a good idea? Is it a problem for instance that Nintendo seem to trying to capture two entirely different audiences with the same console? Would the Wii have continued to do well if the Wii U or whatever was made instead had came out in 2014 or something instead?

And the general concept, do you like it? Is the touch screen/tablet controller a good idea, or would a more traditional one have worked better? What about just Wii remotes?

What do you think?

Well, it seems weird at first since you'll have to look at 2 screens, but then again I'm sure that's what people thought with the DS.

As long as they do not screw up the games, it should be fine.

I find it strange that you're asking us when none of us have had any sort of hands-on experience with even the console, much less any games that will be on it.
How can we possibly form a halfway legitimate opinion on whether the Wii U was a good idea when we haven't even played on it yet?

It's far too soon to say. It'll depend on how well games can take advantage of all the new bells and whistles, and whether that adds up to an experience that's as worthwhile as it is unique.

I'm not sure if they could afford to wait till 2014. Wii technology was already dated. It makes sense to get a headstart on the competition while they can. They probably can't compete with Sony and Microsoft for power anyway, but at this stage differences in graphics quality is probably going to become less and less noticeable anyway.

Well, the touch screen controllers have made me more then a little curious about the Wii U. Whether or not it would work better than a classic controller, I can't say. The only way to truly find out is to try it, which is impossible at this moment in time. I don't think it was a mistake for nintendo to try and bring in 2 different audiences with one console. All they have to do is make games that appeal to both audiences I would think.

I agree with Audacity. It is too early, but from what I've seen so far it looks to be amazing.

Eh. I feel like console releases are more successful when they're several years apart, but whadda I know?

I don't understand?

Wii U is due for release in 2012, Wii came out in 2006, it was preceded by Gamecube in 2001, and Nintendo 64 in 1996, and SNES in 1990.

Seems like it's about due to me. The lifespan looks to be about 5-6 years per console generation.

I am excited to play on the WiiU! I think it was a good idea not to stick with just the Wii remote. As much as I love my Wii, I don't see the conrtoller design as my favorite feature.

IMO, It's just the next generation of Wiis. Soon we'll have Virtual Wiis....Then Virtual Virtual wiis, where you see a Virtual world with a virtual wii, where you start playing the virtual games. I could swear I was playing Virtual Wii in that..
Seriously though, none of that really matters so long as the games that come out make use of the Wii U's full potentials.

2000th post! =D

Is it odd that I own all nintendo consoles except the virtual boy? I normally buy the consoles as soon as they come out because Nintendo almost always finds a way to make the best consoles.

Well it kinda looks like a DS and a Wii combined, so it is pretty smooth. And the controls looks great, unless you have to use that screen controller for almost every game. I don't want to just put my old Wii remotes in a box, and never use them anymore, although I might not get the Wii U.

Goodness, has it been that long already? I had no idea...geez, time flies.

I think the controller concept is crap simply because

1) It looks like a clunky version of a Game Gear, so it looks really uncomfortable to hold.
2) Why the hell do we need another screen for the WiiU? Isn't that what the DS was made for? In all honesty, console releases should just be the one television screen and that's it. Plus, it seems rather much. I can see two screens on the DS because it's a handheld and they are close together. But for the WiiU you have to look up and down and up and down from the television to the controller. Just seems a bit hectic.
3) How much is this actually going to cost? The controller itself looks like a handheld.
