I feel like this is different enough from a lot of 3D Sonic and I like that it's story-driven but could also have been better written than just fighting Eggman again because he is a threat.

Yeah, but I will say this isn't a new idea as in Sonic Advance 3 there's a cyber level too. But this one looks a bit more inspired to be alien.

I feel like they spoiled the secret ending because that's what happens in 2D Sonic when you get all the Emeralds or you got a bunch of rings and didn't get hit.

It can ruin some of the moments in a game if you hear it before you're supposed to. Especially if there's a build up to something epic.
Also I beat this last night and honestly, it's probably the best Sonic game ever. It has its flaws, but its still fun to play and fun to go fast and fun to explore the world.
