Here is the most successful aspect of Zelda from my personal view: Elegant design.
First I will share a game design theory from Keith Burgun: Clockwork Game Design
It means:
Elegant Game is designed to have as few rules and as many connections between Connection as possible; while Patchwork Game is a large number of rules but few connections betweenConnection
Elegant design is where any objects within the game are tightly linked to each other, where the design is actually geared towards interaction between objects (game mechanics), and where innovation comes from.
Then, let's look at the fantastic design in Zelda's bull, I'll take air kettle as an example. The function of it is as follows:
Excavating buried materials by sucking away the soil
Absorb over the surface enemies and launch them
Absorb spring-like mushrooms and launch yourself out
Absorb flame attacks
Blow out the flames on the ground
Absorb hard to pick up items
Absorb the clouds stepped on by monsters to stun them
Blow away the ignited bombs to attack from a distance
Water level of the lotus boat propulsion
Absorb the top-down ghosts to push the plot forward
The two motion of a prop (object) is so elegantly connected to kills, levels, weapons, puzzles, movement, other props, pickups, controls, boss battles so many other objects within the game! If you take the number of functions of the objects as the learning cost of playing the game, and the number of interactions and combinations of interactions (game mechanics) that can be obtained as the benefit, simply learning to blow and suck from the air pots simply has a huge pleasure benefit! And this is just the tip of the iceberg of Zelda's world! The world comes together with this creative and dense system of interactions (game mechanics), and that's where I see the biggest appeal of Zelda!
