Are gift cards a good gift?

In Asia I don't think gift cards are more of a thing rather a novelty gift you give to people when you literally ran out of time or money to get something nicer. Gift cards usually expire quickly if you haven't cashed it in, and sometimes the shops themselves refuse to acknowledge them even though everything you did was against the rules. Either way, just give them money and let them spend it on whatever they want. It's easier and you won't get any complaints from the receiver.

Here in Australia gift cards in general are valid for 2 years. I do then for birthdays and Christmas presents and never got a complaint from anyone about then.

Nothing says "I don't care enough to get you anything memorable" than giving someone an envelope of money at an event. Let them think of ways to spend it. Or let them invest it to the bank. I see nothing wrong with gift cards, esp. if it's from a store that the person likes. For example, a Walmart card would be fine for me since I shop there all the time.

I agree money is best. I think in some cases, a giftcard or regular gift like food or clothing can be better like if the person is super rich where he does not need anymore money, or the person have a drug addiction, or gambling problem where the person will not be responsible, and use money to gamble, or buy drugs.
 
Not really. They may or may not actually be good deals, but the whole 'idea' of it seems like you're saying you can't be bothered to look for a better gift. They're just the 'lazy' option here.

I personally don't like it and would rather give the person actual money instead of a card that expires over time if forgotten. Where I grew up, it's looked down upon as it seems like the person who gave it didn't make any effort on looking for gifts. If the person's a gamer, I would rather give a steam card as I know they would most likely use that immediately after.

Perhaps, but the same can be said for cash! :D
 
My parents like to give cash as presents. I got a $20 bill for my birthday. Hey, that works! :)
 
I don't mind getting gift cards. Especially if it's gift cards/gift certificates to places like Amazon or something like that. You can't really use cash and I'd rather use the gift card/gift certificate rather than using a credit card.

Same over here in the UK. There are some that are valid for longer. People actually prefer giftcards over here compared to proper presents
