Pre order number is really bad in Japan, looks like the one man only and no control-able/customizable party members ala traditional FF is turning away fans of the series in Japan. read from gamefaqs:

So I've been following Japan COMG pre-order number. To be blunt, FFXVI pre-order number looks bad, like REAL BAD

FFXV 53 days before launch = 270 units (FFXV was released in Nov-2016. Back then PS4 install base was roughly the same as PS5 install base right now, about 3.2 million in Japan)

So I said this is weird, PlayStation install base in Japan is relatively constant, but why there's huge disparity between FFXV vs FFXVI pre-order number. What's the difference between the two games?

Could it be the combat??

So I checked DMC5 pre-order number
DMC5 53 days before launch = 42 units. voila! FFXVI preorder number is more aligned to DMC5 number than to previous Final Fantasy games

well Xenoblade chronicles 2 and 3 are not banned there despite the PLOT lol probably because of Saudi's share in Nintendo

Pikmin 4 preorder number is catching up in Japan, wonder if Pikmin 4 is going to beat FF16 in Japan..
 
What’s the breakdown of worldwide vs Japan sales for FF? I was under the impression that FF is bigger in the West than in Japan (where Dragon Quest is king).

As a gaijin, I’ve beaten I, IV, and XIII. I’m probably gonna jump back into the franchise with XVI.

I think FF has gone up and down in Japan.

While mainline FFs do go up and down, usually Mainline FFs are still around +/-1 million copies sold in Japan with good preorder numbers. FF 16 made a new preorder record in Japan with the really low preorder number.
