Paper Mario Comic - FINAL TOPIC

Alright everybody, here it is! Well... I haven't uploaded it to the web, as I've explained in the attached READ ME text file in this ZIP I've uploaded. It's 16 MB, so sorry about that for any slow Internet connection users.

Be sure to read that READ ME, it highlights the importance of NOT MOVING THE BGM, SOUNDS OR COM FOLDER AWAY FROM THE SWF FILE. If you do that, you die.

Like I point out in the READ ME, the thing is free of any major bugs as far as I'm aware, and the only things I would expect to go wrong with it are overlapping sounds, and nothing else. If you do get an error, don't complain, just let me know when and where, and I'll look into it. Also, tell me if you encounter the error on your first playthrough, or encounter it after returning to the title screen or option screen (the four choices) again.

Hope you all enjoy this, I'm rather proud of it!

I'd like to give an honest review thing, but there's one MAJOR flaw that's keeping me from doing this correctly:
The green button thing isn't working. It worked the first time I jumped on Bowser and the first time I hammered Bowser, but between blocking the punch with the hammer, jumping to dodge the fireball, and clicking to jump on Bowser twice, it has ceased to function. :/

I had no idea how this would turn out...but this is so funny!

I was actually laughing out loud half the time I played this. I haven't finished yet (how the HELL do I punch fast enough to break through the wall?...I just got 28 hits and didn't go through...I'll shoot for 30 next) but I'm loving what I've seen so far. NDan, you need to be getting paid for work like this.

EDIT: Also, it may just be me, but I can never seem to avoid any of Bowser's attacks.

Wait, the button doesn't work? That has seriously never happened to me once... so uh... when did it start not working? I do know that I put on some "cheat protection" with the jump scene to avoid people rapidly clicking the button to always land a double jump, and that temporarily disables the button.

One thought I just had is that maybe it has something to do with that, where it isn't adding any clicking events to the button because it's got stuck into some "permanently disabled" mode.

EDIT: Because I'm concerned about that, try running it in an Internet browser if you haven't already. If you have, then I'm not sure what the problem is, but everything's checking out on my end, I can't find anything strange and Flash isn't telling me there are any errors. I mean, I've never encountered this problem, so it's a first for me. If anybody else has similar issues, tell me exactly how it happens, heh.

Bowser's attacks are hard to dodge, especially the fire, but the punch is the easiest, just look for when he moves his arm. Also, for the Bowser wall thing, I've found clicking slightly slower than super fast seems to do the trick, so give that a shot.

Just checked the Bowser scene, I swear when I threw a punch the wall didn't move, but I'm not sure if it's registering a hit or not when that happens. It could very well be the computer isn't registering any hits, and in that case, I better fix that up.

EDIT: I've run a quick test that sends a message to this box each time Bowser is punching, and I got my little "hi" message back every Bowser's punch was at full strength (when his arm was fully stretched out). All I can say is that it should really only take 22 punches to knock down, but of course, you can click a lot more than that and still possibly lose if the punches aren't timed, though about 30 clicks should be enough to do it. Did the wall have cracks when you were playing? If so, were slight chunks of the wall taken out and were there lots of cracks? Because that's the final crack animation, so if you get to that, then you're close. Apart from that potential thing, it could have something to do with the computer you're running it with (I get a lot of weird errors with that, and it's kind of annoying. Running the SWF in an Internet browser seems to solve a few problems, however, so give that a shot if you still can't get it), although I hope it isn't. The code seems fine though.

Still, thanks peeps for playin'!

It turned out so beautifully.

And now for this.

uh....how long does it take for the curtains to rise?
huh.gif
regardless if I "skip" or just press "Start", it freezes on the curtains.

Okay, that's a seriously odd error that shouldn't be happening. When you press "Start", text should drop down, if you press "Skip Intro", it'll jump to a scene where the curtains lower. Seeing as nobody else is having this issue, I'm not sure why that's even happening.

Like usual, try opening the SWF in an Internet browser and see if that does anything. Make sure all the files are in their same location, too, so the SWF is with the com folder and whatnot. To me it sounds like a Flash Player issue or a Tween issue (Tween issues relate with the com folder).

well, whatever the case, I can't do nothing. And i found two more things-
1. Need to click the Start/Skip once, then click anywhere. (Supposed to do that?)
2. No audio plays at the beginning. (Is there audio at the beginning?)

Other than that, the files are fine.

For the clicking once thing, uh, doesn't sound right. For the audio, yes, there's audio. Because the extent of the problems sound so serious, I'm going to say it might have something to do with your computer. You've got Flash Player 10, right?

I have the same problem and I have Flash player 10... how do you install fonts?!

You copy paste the font files I included into the Fonts folder of your computer. Also, I don't know why that's happening, because I showed it to another friend and they didn't have any problems whatsoever.

I am fairly confident that this error is not an actual coding error on my behalf, because Flash doesn't run any errors and it plays fine on my system, so there must be something else that's causing the issue. I'll have to check my export settings again.

EDIT: For a test, I uploaded it to File Smelt and I've received the same error that the two of you are getting. What this means exactly, I'm not entirely sure. I mean, it has worked on several computers. Perhaps you need the actual Adobe Flash CS4 or higher program to be able to run it for some strange reason (that's unlikely, however). One interesting thing is, I didn't upload the audio when I uploaded to FileSmelt, so obviously, there was no audio. This means that... maybe the error lies within the audio. It can't be the com folder, as it doesn't actually need that to Tween, I've found out.

EDIT EDIT: BINGO, just got the problem. It's not referencing the MP3 files properly, I moved the SWF away from the BGM and Sound folders on my computer and I got the exact same error as you. I know you said you've checked your folders, which makes it all the more confusing, but the error is definitely a stream error, AKA, it's trying to reference a file that doesn't exist and, as a result, throws an error and won't play because it's constantly checking for those files.

The only error I had was with the fonts for the start button on the title screen.

Heh, very funny adventure here NintenDan. Call me lame but I can't beat the Challenge with Luigi or the quiz with Peach. Maybe my brain's low on power today.

I liked the ending for Bowser, that was hilarious!!!

Well, I'm still having the darndest time avoiding Bowser's attacks (haven't avoided any, actually), but I'm still willing to still attribute that to player error. As for punching the wall, the wall never cracked nor showed any signs of damage.

I'm using the standalone version of Adobe Flash Player 9 on a WinXP system. I'm also getting system fonts for half of the text (typically all non-dialog related text) and I get an error message stating that the fonts are currently in use whenever I try to install them.

Well, I think the thing was exported for Flash Player 10. OS shouldn't really matter though. As for the fonts, I fixed that in a later version. Bowser's attacks I also fixed (though the punch is still a bit hard, heh). The punching wall... I don't have a clue. It works okay on my computer and all the school computers, as well as the teacher's laptop, but they're all Windows 7 32 and 64-bit, so that might have something to do with it. I wouldn't bother too much with it though, I've already handed it in. Might release an updated version soon-ish.
