PlayStation Playstation 5

wonder why you can't download the games to the external support?

probably it has something to do with game encryption/piracy protection stuff being built in with the internal custom ssd and thus it has to go through the custom ssd first.

I get that, and the process still happens, but you skip the extra selection steps and just have it funnel through the process. Meh, whatever.

Just read from Twinfinite on Sony’s quarterly conference call :

Totoki-san admitted that in the past fiscal year, Sony has not managed to keep up with the extremely strong demand for PS5 and shortages for the supply of components — especially semiconductors — are expected to continue in the current fiscal year.

That being said, the current target is still to exceed the 14.8 million units shipped by the PS4 in its second fiscal year on the market.

To meet the strong demand from customers, Sony will continue to strive to secure components and do its best to produce and sell more units than the target mentioned. That being said, Totoki-san admitted later in the call that it’s unlikely that supply will be drastically increased.

Sony expects software sales to drop year-on-year during the first quarter that will end on June 30, but they should go back to matching last year’s performance from the second quarter onward.

As for network services, Sony does not expect a significant increase in subscribers as it happened in the previous fiscal year (due to stay-at-home orders), but it still aims to hold and possibly increase the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers.

The house of PlayStation also plans to increase the number of development personnel in its first-party studios by approximately 20 billion yen (about $183.5 million) year-on-year as the software production capability will be further strengthened.

To enhance the software offering, Sony aims to continue investing in partnering with external studios in addition to “aggressively investing” in in-house studios. An example mentioned of said partnerships is the one with Jade Raymond’s studio Haven Entertainment.

On top of investing in big games, PlayStation also wants to enhance the social capabilities of its titles.

The PS Plus games for just the PS5 recently have been amazing. We're getting Wreckfest in May which I am looking forward to a lot!

A bit like Destruction Derby where you race against others but can absolutely wreck their cars as well.

Yeah, I can't wait to see how it runs with the DualSense controller as well. Finally got myself a good PS5 driving/racing game

let us know how it goes.
It's not that strong in races although you do feel a bit of resistance when braking. It's best experienced with the demolition derbies after your car is completely broken. The triggers offer a lot more resistance which feels nice.

Like how much resistance? Like they kind of lock up so you have to press harder?

Yes, accelerating when you're engine is damaged is slightly difficult because you have to press harder. It's not the best use of the DualSense features though. There are other games that have done a better job

It's quite nice, to be honest. Helps you figure out whats wrong with the car as well without really having to look at the HUD a lot

Ps5 is gettting a major software update on April 14:

PlayStation 5 Storage Expansion and Management

  • Store PlayStation 5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives – With this feature, you can now transfer your PlayStation 5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PlayStation 5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PlayStation 5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PlayStation 5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.

  • Because PlayStation 5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD, PlayStation 5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PlayStation 5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.
  • For tips on using USB extended storage on PlayStation 5, including storage device requirements, please visit this link.
As previously announced, the PlayStation 5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives in the future. We’re currently working on this feature and will keep you posted with any updates on PlayStation Blog.

New Social Features for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Consoles

  • Cross-Generation Share Play – PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players can now Share Play together while chatting in parties. This means PlayStation 5 console users can let their friends on PlayStation 4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PlayStation 5 games through Share Play, and vice versa. Options include the ability to share your screen with a friend, pass your controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together.
  • Request to Join Game Session – A selection of your friends’ joinable game sessions will now appear on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles, allowing for more gameplay opportunities together. The “Request to Join” option also serves as a shortcut to sending a game invite, reducing the time it takes for you to get into games with friends. Through the Privacy Settings menu, you can modify who can interact with you through parties, games and messages.
Enhanced Control and Personalization Options for PlayStation 5 Consoles

  • Improved Game Base – The Game Base menu has been improved for quicker access to important content and features. You can now easily switch between Parties and Friends to start chatting with your existing parties or see what each of your online friends is up to. In addition, you can turn notifications on or off for each of the parties you’re in.
  • Disable Game Chat or Adjust Players’ Volume – You can now quickly disable in-game chat, which turns off your mic audio and the voice audio of other players. Additionally, you can easily adjust the individual voice chat volume of other players in the same chat so you don’t have to ask your friends to lower or increase their mic volume each time.
  • Game Update Pre-download – Once it’s enabled by developers, title updates for games will pre-download to your console if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled and your console is on or in rest mode. This will let you start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.
  • Customize Game Library – With the ability to search your library or hide games from view, it’s now easier to find content and personalize your view of your game library.
  • Screen Zoom – You can now adjust the magnification of the screen to suit your preference from the Settings menu.
  • New Trophy Settings and Stats Screen – The level of trophies that results in automatic capture of a screenshot or video clip can now be customized — so you can now choose to only capture and save images/videos of moments when you earn higher-grade trophies, like Gold or Platinum. We’re also introducing a new player Trophy Stats screen, where you can check out the summary of your trophy level and status at a glance.

New Features for PlayStation App

We’re also introducing a myriad of new features for PlayStation App to make it easier than ever to connect with your console experience remotely. Recently, we introduced the ability to save products in a wishlist, get notifications when your friends are online, and change your console online status. In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out even more, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PlayStation 5 from the app, manage your PlayStation 5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store. You can download PlayStation App for free from Google Play and the App Store.
It's great to see that they've taken some customer feedback on board and manged some swift changes.

Read from gematsu and Bloomberg on the ps5 shortage will continue into 2022:

Sony Group chief financial officer Hiroki Totok said it has been challenging to keep up with strong demand due to shortages in components such as semiconductors.

“I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,”

Totoki continued, “We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily.”

For example, we could find maybe [a] second resource [for semiconductors], or by changing design, we could cope with [semiconductor shortages],” said Totoki
