As if they didn't see this coming after that statement their CEO issued about Microsoft and Nintendo.
I laughed pretty hard. What makes it twice as funny is that the timing couldn't have been better - it went down around the same time that Portal 2 was released, which is officially the first Steam game available for PS3.
Suck it, Sony.

Bahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The CEO is full of himself but I feel bad for the PS3 players whom can't play online for stupid reasons. Either they got hacked or are having problems and needed a scapegoat.

Its been down for like three days now, slowpoke :3

Kinda sucks hackers did this for a stupid reason, I really wanted to watch some movies on Netflix and play some MvC.

As for the Portal 2 co-op, I'll be finishing that on my PC. Gotta love Valve for giving away a free copy.

I'm able to watch movies Netflix even while PSN is down. My sisters are watching a movie right now. o_O

Really? Huh well I'll have to go and try it again. Thanks.

I think it'll ask you to put in your email to log in or something like that. Try logging in and it'll say something like playstation network has errors and it'll be trying to fix it or something like that. Hit circle it I think you should be in. That's how I got in Netflix.

Anonymous hacked PSN because Sony prosecuted some guy for jailbreaking the PS3 and distributing somethin'. I don't remember all the details, but I saw a statement from Anonymous somewhere on the matter. They said that they halted the attacks because they realized they were hurting the gaming community more than they were Sony.

And this is kinda old news <.<

Are you sure this is the same hacking we're talking about? I have read that Anonymous hacked them once before, but they are denying this attack. Also this just happed a couple days ago and is still current, so it's not really old news...

i sent this link to all my firends with a PS3

Yes, this is the Anon hacking. It's in retaliation to a recent lawsuit. The timing of the game releases probably wasn't coincidental, and the attacks were stopped to support the gamers.

Anon hacked them BEFORE for that. Anonymous denied having involvement with this hacking but says as soon as PSN is up, they're going to hack them, but not PSN itself.

I think you need to read the article... This is the second hacking, it's not the same one as April 4th.

Ah, my mistake. Still, the hacker did claim to be from Anonymous, and Anon can really be represented by anyone. It was just a particular hacking group of Anon that denied involvement.

I've just heard that Sony are completely rebuilding PSN. It might be down for a while if that's the case... I also heard Capcom games aren't even playable on single player without being connected to the PSN.

I'm so glad no one has mentioned 4Chan yet.

Some info I found from Kotaku.

How long has PSN been down?
The system went down last Wednesday, April 20th. (That's six days if you're keeping score.)

When will it be back?
No one really knows, not even Sony. Current rumors suggest that PSN may be going back online in Japan today (4/25), with the US and Europe coming back tomorrow. (4/26)

Can I play games without going online, either by myself or with a friend locally?
Absolutely. Almost every PS3 game, whether it's played via disc or download, will work so long as you're using a mode that doesn't require PSN access. (That's internet multiplayer, mostly.) There is a small exception to this, which I'll explain a little later.

What about using a LAN?
Sure, a setting up a little LAN party would be a great alternative. The only problem is that the selection of LAN-capable PS3 games is pretty limited.

Is Anonymous responsible?
Probably not. The group has publicly denied their involvement, and there has been no definitive proof to say otherwise.

So why are they being arrested?
They aren't. The rumor is based on an old press release from January.

If the network was hacked, should I be worried that someone is stealing my credit card number?
Sony has said that they are investigating whether or not any credit information was stolen. As of now, they haven't said anything about the status of that investigation. So far there have been no credible reports of identity theft connected to the shutdown.

Some games use digital rights management to prevent piracy. Will that effect my ability to play?
As of now, the only games that we know to be affected are a pair of Capcom downloadable games, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and the Final Fight/Magic Sword game pack.

So I can't play any games online or use PSN. Can I still use non-game PSN apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc?
Nope. No game modes, apps or DLC connected to either PSN or Qriocity are currently available.

UPDATE: As you can tell from the comments section, we are getting conflicting reports on whether or not Netflix is actually working at the moment. Many commenters and forum-goers have claimed that they've been using Netflix for days, often noting that the service doesn't always connect right away, but starts up on the second or third try.

What about features like the browser, which use the internet, but aren't connected to PSN?
Users have reported via forums that the PS3 browser still works.

Can I still get system updates?
The system update feature is not connected to PSN and is therefore functional. (Ever notice that you have to sign out of PSN to download an update?) Users can still also download system updates via the Playstation website.

Is there a chance my trophies could get wiped?
Trophies will not update as long as PSN is down, but since most of them are not internet-based, it's likely (but not definite) that the trophies that you earn during the shutdown will be added to your account when it updates once PSN is back online. If you were to delete your account or if your console were to crash, however, you would definitely lose any trophies earned while PSN is down. Currently, it is not possible to check trophies via the Playstation website.

Will I lose my saved game data?
Not likely, your saved game data is stored on your hard drive, and therefore should not be effected by outage.

Am I more likely to lose my data if I've been using the cloud storage feature of
Playstation Plus?
No. While you definitely aren't able to update any data you've saved in the cloud, the cloud data is technically a copy of whatever was saved from your machine, so even if the back-up data was lost your save would still be in tact on the machine where it was originally recorded.

Nice bunch of answers there

Lol, 4chan. I'm putting my money on Microsoft as being responsible for the hacking, after those comments from Sony's CEO. Great timing with the release of Portal 2 for Microsoft, too xD

Yeah, Microsoft did kinda get screwed with Portal 2. Xbox owners aren't getting a free PC copy and they're not getting updates through Steam Cloud.

Now on a completely somewhat related note CHECK OUT THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!

Instead of finding the network being down amusing or an excuse to take fangirlish/fanboyish blows to a corporation that really doesn't give a crap of your existence we should all focus on the reality of the situation:

Chill out, no big deal.

So its down. Xbox Live went down for 2 weeks during the holidays for just upgrading/expansion of servers. Steam has gone down in the past due to server failure and lack of backup generators. Everyone on any platform has had misfortune placed upon them and instead of pointing fingers we should just relate with them.

I don't just game online with the PS3 only, I have other consoles to fill in the gap. Besides, Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat have plenty enough single player secrets and unlockables to keep me content until the network is up. At least I know the network will go back up and everything will continue like nothing happened.

You should also take note of the exploit which allows hacked PS3s to copy the cached purchase history of another user and use it to download games from the store for free. Think of the hard working small developers who make incredible games getting cheated by those who have no shame to use such an exploit. Stolen games resorts to less support from Indies and small studios. Didn't think about that part thoroughly huh?

And about Microsoft getting shafted by not getting Steamworks implemented. Didn't you read about their closed regulations which prevent outside content from being allowed accessed on their network? Think about it. They did it to their selves.

Come on, this is getting ridiculous.

Regarding Steamworks, I did read somewhere that M$ wasn't allowing free content through Steam on the 360. Was there any specific reason why though? It must have made them loose sales for the game having the obvious worst version of the game for the console.

PSN going down hasn't caused me any problems. Netflix still works, I have my sisters to play Portal 2 co-op, and this gives me a chance to finish up playing through Metroid Prime and Okami. Besides, I never really play online anyway, growing up mostly on Nintendo consoles.
